Gulf & Savannah
Day 1.
Leaving Cairns at 8.30a.m. our flight takes us over Mareeba and then following the track of the Savannahlander Train over Dimbulah, 0otann, Mt. Surprise, Einasleigh to Forsayth and on to Howlong Station near Cobbald Gorge.
On the way see the vast network of rivers the Walsh, Tate, Lynd and Einasleigh. Cobbald Gorge is a delight not to be missed. You will enjoy this spectacle as we punt along this unusual waterway. After lunch we fly over Croydon. Croydon was once a booming gold town with rich underground mining and a colourful history. Then on over Gilbert River on the way to Normanton.
Flying on to Normanton we follow the famous Gulflander train line. Normanton, a sprawling boom town in the 1800's as the port for Croydon goldfield with its own railway, prospered through mining and pastoral interests. Many original buildings still stand and the railway and station still operate.
We take in these sights on a short tour. On departing Normanton you will be taken in by the maze of large river deltas the Normanton, Bynoe and Flinders as we fly out over the Gulf of Carpentaria then to the port of Karumba.
Day 2.
Karumba is famous for its fishing with prawn trawling, barramundi fishing being its way of life. Recreational fishing is very popular with visitors and the world barramundi championship is a popular event. We go fishing this morning with your chance to catch the "big one", then lunch at the Sunset Tavern.
Take in this world of difference before our flight back to Cairns over the vast expanse of Cape York's waterways and cattle properties, past Mt. Mulligan and Chillagoe on the way. Bring two days casual clothing, hat and walking shoes.
